First science video coming soon, hurricane season approaches, and a subscription special

Hi everyone! We are headed into the Memorial Day weekend and the looming start of meteorological summer, and I wanted to share a few exciting things happening with Balanced Weather.

A big reason I started this Balanced Weather Substack was to hopefully bring additional visibility to some of the cool research and development being done by scientists in the weather and geosciences community. One of the ways I plan to do this is through periodic videos where I will invite scientists to present on their work. These recorded videos will be available to all subscribers, but paid subscribers will get the opportunity to participate in the sessions and ask questions. I feel like I have learned enough about how Substack works that I am ready to kick this aspect of Balanced Weather off, and I am thrilled to be starting it with my colleague Dr. Tony Lyza from NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory. Tony will be talking about his recent paper (with co-authors Drs. Harold Brooks and Makenzie Krocak) Where Have the EF5s Gone? A Closer Look at the “Drought” of the Most Violent Tornadoes in the United States.

We will be recording this session next Thursday, May 29th at 2 pm CT. Paid subscribers to Balanced Weather will be able to participate in the session live, and I will be sending out more information about Tony’s work and providing the opportunity to submit questions ahead of time if you cannot attend the live session. So if you are interested in tornado damage, how it is studied and surveyed, and the climatology of tornadoes and why we have gone so long without an EF5 tornado, this is your chance to engage with one of the preeminent scientists working on these topics.

To celebrate the start of these science videos and to hopefully enable more people to become paid subscribers as we head into hurricane season, I am running a hurricane season subscription special. If you subscribe at the link below before June 6th, you will get 15% off of your subscription fee for the next 12 months. As a reminder, in addition to being able to be an active participant in these science videos, paid subscribers also can post questions/comments on all posts as well as receive access to live video briefings and real-time chat events during weather events. During hurricane season, I am planning on using this live video and chat functionality to do things like providing real-time explanations of live incoming data from reconnaissance flights and evaluating model forecasts for tropical cyclones. With your paid Balanced Weather subscription, you also get a free paid subscription to the Fairy Dust Forecast newsletter if desired.

Finally, I want to say thanks to everyone who has followed or subscribed to Balanced Weather. In just over 2 months, nearly 600 people have come on board. There is a lot happening in the weather world right now, both with the actual weather and with all of the governmental and private sector aspects of the meteorological community. I plan to keep providing information that will hopefully keep you better informed about what is happening with all of that and also provide content that you find interesting and informative. I am always open to suggestions and can be reached at AlanG@balancedweather.com.
